I used to be afraid to drive. After getting my very first driver's license, I was both excited and scared to death at the same time. Growing up in a very small mid-western town, the back country roads weren't so scary for me, but having to get on the highway to go to the big cities gave me great anxiety. And, the bigger the city, the worse it was. For some, those who don't seem to be afraid of anything, it was all natural. They can just do it...easy peasy.
I couldn't drive myself to the biggest city I had to visit until I was in my 40's. I didn't have the luxury of GPS. I had to depend on me, road signs and luck. By the time I would reach my destination, I would have to just sit in the car for a long while to pry my fingers from the steering wheel and calm down. I still get a little worrisome when I have to drive into the big city for anything, but now...I have GPS! GPS is like a miracle to me! A guide right there in the car, giving me directions and telling me when a turn is coming and where my destination is. I love GPS!
In the start of my journey to getting well, I viewed everything much like an aerial view of a crazy highway. You know the types, with crazy exits you hope are the right ones AFTER you've taken them. The confusing signs that really go by too quickly to read so you guess...and you hope. I remember one time, I was supposed to meet my son for dinner and had to drive such a highway. What should have been a 20 minute drive took me an hour and a half because I was confused by the signs. Had I had GPS at that time, I would have been just fine.
While on my wellness journey I discovered that we each have our own built in GPS. Our Internal Decision Making System, our Inner Passenger Seat Guide, just like our car's GPS.
Most of us just don't know how to use it. We have it, it's there, all the time and yet it just waits for us to pay attention. In the meanwhile, we take wrong turns and get lost.
I am not talking about being psychic or getting into all of that metaphysical stuff. Most call it intuition or that "gut feeling". Some people have been able to recognize this and use it from a very early age, but people like me, ignore it or don't know how to listen to it. I have been one to rely on the advice of others, asking for suggestion or just making decisions based on "tradition".
By that I mean the ways family and friends always have done things or the ways those
same people expected I should do them. I have never relied on my own GPS, my own
gut feelings, my intuition. I know it's tried to guide me. All of my life I know it's tried. And
I've not listened or known how to listen to it.
Learning To Listen And Trust Your Intuition
There have always been and always will be times when your personal GPS has given you information. Those times you "just know" something. You can't quite put your finger on it, or you don't have anything to back up that knowing, but you "just know". It might not seem logical or practical, but you "just know". That's your intuition, your GPS.
Don't ignore this. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. If it feels like something you should do, it probably is. Your "gut feeling", your GPS, your intuition is trying to guide you.
Tips To Tune In To Your Intuition
Slow down and stop thinking so much. Take some time to just sit and allow yourself to shut your mind off for a little while. Instead, let your soul, your spirit, your inner self talk to you. Ask your inner you, your GPS, for the guidance in whatever it is you are struggling with. Your inner you has the Universe on speed dial and will get you that answer and that direction.
Get in touch with nature. Go outside and sit or take a walk. Sit by an open window if you are not able to physically get out there. Just listen. Soak in the sounds of nature, the songs the universe is singing...to you. Just listen. Allow your mind to be still and just embrace this peace. Your intuition will work much easier for you if you allow it the silence of your mind.
Make sure to set aside time each day to do something that makes you happy. Something that allows you to bring out your inner child, your fun. That healthy activity that you lose track of time doing. Dance in your living room to your favorite music. Color or read with your children, or even just with yourself. If you are an artist, paint or draw. Whatever it is that allows you just get lost in the enjoyment of you and that thing you love to do, do that.
Trust yourself. You are your very best guide. Your intuition already has all the lessons learned throughout your life, all the knowledge of what has worked and what hasn't for you.
